~ About Golden Retrievers ~
Thank you for taking the time to read about the Golden Retriever. The information here is comprised largely of material that the American Kennel Club sets out as standard for the Golden Retriever breed. We have also incorporated knowledge we have gained in our 30+ years experience as breeders. Whether you buy a Golden Retriever from us or from another kennel, it is important that you have this information and use it when making such an important financial and emotional investment, both for yourselves and for your dog.
An important piece that brings such high value to the Golden Retriever breed is their disposition. For more than a century the Golden Retriever has been a family dog whose gentle nature and loving ways has enabled it to be a trusted friend and family companion, always patient with children and faithfully acting as a loyal protector to their family; while it’s intelligence and powerful athleticism has allowed it to be a working dog, whether in the hunting field, tracking in rescue work, guiding for the blind, during therapy work, or excelling in confirmation shows and agility trials.
The Golden Retriever was originally designed to be primarily a hunting dog in Scotland. The terrain types for this type of hunting were fields and wetland, lakes and rivers and usually dense undergrowth. The coat should be dense and not too short but it should also not be too long. Too much coat does not help the dog in swimming, running though the bush and it will carry too much weight when wet. The outer coat that sheds thorns and brambles in the field, and an undercoat that offers protection from icy waters; a balanced, symmetrical dog that works equally well on land and water, while remaining highly pleasing to the eye; a dog strong enough to perform as a retriever of game and water fowl, yet not so big that it rocks the boat from which it works. Above all, the dog should cheerfully do these things for every member of the family.
American Or British "European"? ~ Actually there is only one Golden Retriever breed, however in different countries through the evolution of breeding practices, and the development of various breed standards that pertain to certain countries. There are two types of Golden Retrievers currently available to golden lovers. What is referred to as the “American Golden Retriever” and the “British Golden Retriever”. There are minor differences allowed by the American Kennel Club and the Kennel Club of the United Kingdom related to the colors and sizes of the Golden Retriever.

These differences notwithstanding, the most important breed characteristic remains, they should all possess a true Golden Retriever temperament; gentle, friendly and loyal. The pigment on their noses, the pads of their feet, their gums and their under belly skin should be black. Their general appearance should be symmetrical, balanced, active, powerful, sound with kindly expression. Temperament kind, friendly and confident. Head and skull balanced and well chiseled, skull broad without coarseness, well set on neck, muzzle powerful, wide and deep, blending smooth and strongly into skull. Their eyes should be friendly and intelligent in expression, dark brown, set well apart, dark rims. Ears rather short, set on approximate level with eyes, and when pulled forward, tip of ear should just cover the eye. Jaws strong, with a regular and complete scissor bite. Neck good length, clean and muscular. Coat dense and water-repellent with good undercoat. Outer coat firm and resilient, may be straight or wavy. Forequarters straight with good bone, shoulders well laid back. Elbows close fitting. Body balanced, short-coupled, deep through heart, ribs deep, well sprung. Hindquarters broad and strongly muscled. Gait powerful with good drive.
Golden Retriever owners should give their dogs enough exercise to keep them fit and to run off the ebullience that is their birthright. Obedience training is also important for Golden's.
